Raymond Scott & His Orchestra - ‘Twilight In Turkey’ (1957)
Ke$ha and her producers have got nothing on Raymond Scott when it comes to sampling the melody of ‘The Streets of Cairo, or the Poor Little Country Maid’ (The “There’s a place in France/The Girls in France/On The Planet Mars song of playgrounds) I mean, its use in cartoons and other media to portray anything remotely “exotic” or of the Egyptian, Arab, Arabia, deserts, belly dancing and snake charming type goes way way back and the tune has been around in one form or another since the late nineteenth century by recording and similarities to other songs reaches back into the 1700’s. Has also been called ‘Snake Charmer’ or ‘The Snake Charmer Song’ or ‘Hoochy Coochy Dance’.
